Keep Calm and Decorate

This post is about decorating, I promise. But I have a teensy story to share beforehand. And yes, it's related...
I took a Strengths Finder test about four years ago, as a class requirement, when I was a young and naive freshman (no disrespect to my former self).  The theme of this test is along the lines of this quote: "Do you have the opportunity to do what you do best every day?" The point is to develop your strengths instead of focusing on your weaknesses.

The personal assessment test takes you through a series of  questions in regards to your reaction in any given situation. There are 34 "strengths" all together, but the less expensive version of the test only presents you with your 5 top strengths.

When I first took the test I don't think I had a strong enough sense of self to get accurate results. At the time I had no idea how to utilize my top five strengths. Now, four years later, I was excited to hear that the organization I work for has every employee take the test. With the exception of one strength, Developer, each one had changed from the results I had as a freshman.

Now my top five in order are: Harmony, Discipline, Developer, Consistency, and Empathy.

And they all describe me insanely well. It is amazing to see how my strength of empathy, can even be my greatest weakness, but I'm learning how to better apply it everyday.
The strength I am most excited for is Developer, meaning I see the potential in the things around me. I apply this strength through decorating, repurposing, and crafting, a strength I believe is a tell-tale sign that I am my mother's daughter :)
I can't live in a space without it being exceptionally decorated, because unintentional, undecorated space is simply not inspirational. A workspace, bedroom, and living room should be decorated to enjoy and bring life to the people using it.
Below are a few pictures of how I "developed" and DIY decorated my current home with the things I already owned. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed creating and living here :)

I'm just a little bit obsessed with bunting flag banners. I'll be making a few for a dear
family friend's wedding soon and I'll be sure to post some pictures.

My latest project has been chalkboard painting anything I could get my hands on.
I took an old $5 Walmart mirror and used spraypaint chalk ($6 Walmart) to cover the glass. My graphic designer roommate suggested spray paint because it coats surfaces evenly. I added another
mirror and dollar store frames with scrapbooking paper to complete this wall in our living room.
And, yes, our apartment is named The Rabbit Hole :)
"Chalked" this yard sale find for a kitchen menu/notes board.

I didn't make the frame, my lovely roommates had already modge podged music sheets to it.
However, I did add the scrapbook paper circles.

Tied Fabric Banner and Holstee Poster

I one day hope to redo my bedroom in neutrals with a kiss of dusty pink,
but this is my sanctuary for now! Can you spot another flag banner? :)
